EXHIBITION #5: PROPHECY, PESTILENCE AND PURPOSE
PAINTING # 39: AT THE GATES!
"... if we sit still here, we die also" - 2 Kings 7: 4
''At the Gates!" by Alton Felix. 2021. Acrylic on Canvas.
Artist's Commentary :
Life sometimes throws an unexpected blow which knocks you down to the ground. This painting of one of the four lepers ( see 2 Kings 7: 4) sparks a conversation with self about life's challenges:
" I’m battered and bruised… an outcast in my own land. The gates are shut to keep me out from the inside. I’m ugly in their eyes. My presence poses a risk to the safety and security of others.
The only thing I’m left with - my will to live – is now under threat. My freedom of choice is curtailed by half-truths, and my right to life is slipping away amidst this 'lock-down.'
I can hear two voices. Those whom I love behind those walls add to the chorus and shout with one voice, “Die will!”
I’m crushed. Defeated and left for dead, I hear the same words from a soft comforting inner voice: ”Thy will!” This message stirs my spirit as my scorched lips mutter the unthinkable, “Thy will be done!”
Suddenly, the colours of my circumstances paint a beautiful picture of faith and trust amidst this fiery trial. A renewed sense of purpose is balanced by reason and risks. If I sit within my mental prison, I will die a prisoner. But if I rise above my fears and adapt, my position changes and improves my life’s chances.
I'll break free from their chains of condemnation and scorn. The words of Esther burn within my soul like a raging fire: “If I perish, I perish!” I lift my blank stare and now I see. My mind’s eye frames pictures of a brighter, more perilous tomorrow. I’m not afraid any more. There is a glimmer of hope because God still sits on His throne."
Be encouraged. Be blessed.

PRAYER
Taken From Parts of Psalm 91
Heavenly Father,
Against all odds I put my trust in You! You are my refuge and my fortress.
I will not be afraid of the terror by night nor of the arrows that fly by day. Protect me against this pandemic that stalks my land, and from the destruction that follows.
Your Word declares that although a thousand may fall at my side and ten thousand at my right hand, it shall not come near me.
Only with my eyes shall I see the reward of the wicked.
O Most High, You are my dwelling place ;
No evil shall befall me,
Nor shall any plague come near my dwelling;
For You have given Your angels charge over me,
To keep me in all my ways.
Thank You for Your love and mercy. In Jesus’ name I pray with thanksgiving. Amen.
